"Eaters of the Soil: de wil tot pracht
Prikkels. Eindeloze prikkels. Gekte. Geweld. Een witte en koperen blazer. In een handomdraai ook weer geweken voor ritme, rust en drones. De Utrechtse formatie Eaters of the Soil geven perfect vorm aan wat Freud omschreef als Ozeanisches Gefühl: onlosmakelijke verbondenheid, van saamhorigheid met de buitenwereld in haar geheel.
En met de buitenwereld komt zowel de orde als wanorde. Scherpe koperen uithalen en fuzzy versterkte snaaraanslagen. Droney drums tot pompende metalrimtes. Saamhorigheid in zowel orde als wanorde. Plots ontstane vechtpartijen tussen trombone en gitaar. Letterlijk. Als ware het zwaarden zo kruisten Rutger van Driel en Stef Brans het koper- en snaarinstrument in een heuse battle of the noises. Een these in krachtmeting met een antithese. De synthese is een explosieve wilsakte om het maximale uit de muziek te halen. Een spektakel ontvouwt zich voor de ogen van de aanwezigen en grist even iedereen weg uit de normale wereld. De luisteraars wordt ingerold in de wereld van Eaters of the Soil. Een bijkans hallucinante ervaring.
Het toneel: Musicon in Den Haag tijdens de Popronde 2022. Een witte blazer verraadt een glitzy benadering van het ophanden zijnde. Zodra Gert Komduur achter de drums zit, Niels Achtereekte zijn bas inplugt, Stef en Rutger geïnstalleerd zijn, wordt het publiek in één vloeiende beweging opgezogen door de georganiseerde gekte van het pulserende kwartet. Noise, metal, doom, jazz, drone, elektro: het balt zich samen in een tomeloze energiekern van alle bandleden. Met volle kracht vooruit. Met evidente energie. Begeestering en beheersing. Geest en geestdrift. Absurd en absorberend.
Deze sonische bromance is doordesemd met levenslust en spelplezier. Musicon was getuige van iets nieuws. Iets alomvattends. Iets wat zich niet laat beperken, maar zich alsmaar uitbreidt. Net zover tot het je als toeschouwer als een hand omsluit en verpulverd. Eaters of the Soil bewijzen dat muziek een dimensie biedt die nauwelijks talig te vatten is. Het is het Ozeanisches Gefühl. De totaliteit. De intensiteit. De saamhorigheid. Tot in de eeuwigheid. Amen."

Stimuli. Endless stimuli. Madness. Violence. A white and copper horn blower. In the blink of an eye giving way to rhythm, serenity and drones. Utrecht formation Eaters of the Soil perfectly express what Freud described as Ozeanisches Gefühl: inseparable connection, of togetherness with the outside world as a whole.
And with the outside world comes both order and disorder. Sharp brass notes and fuzzy amplified string hits. Droney drums to pumping metal riffs. Togetherness in both order and disorder. Suddenly emerging fights between trombone and guitar. Literally. As if they were swords Rutger van Driel and Stef Brans crossed brass and string instruments in a real battle of the noises. A thesis in showdown with an antithesis. The synthesis is an explosive act of will to get the most out of the music. A spectacle unfolds before the eyes of those present, momentarily snatching everyone away from the ordinary world. Listeners are drawn into the world of Eaters of the Soil. An almost hallucinatory experience.

Credits
Towards the end of '22 Eaters of the Soil did a run of ten gigs. The last gig was recorded and the tracks were mixed for a digital onlly release. As a raw and unpolished reminder of the band's first year doing live shows.
