Working the other way around: improv first, doom later
With their third release since summer 2021, trombone fueled doom/noise/jazz act Eaters of the Soil take a side step from their main approach that started with their two self-titled EPs and dig into their (even more) experimental side.
While the self-titled EP’s originated by having trombone, guitar and fretless bass improvise over a prerecorded foundation of drums, doom bass and synths the band decided to somewhat reverse its compositional process.
In preparation of their first live performance early 2022 the band did a technical run down and being all plugged in took the opportunity to record two 15 minute(-ish) improvisations.
The trombone, guitar, fretless bass and drum tracks from that session were taken into the studio to add synths, samples and doom bass. In doing so, the band challenged themselves to fuse its unmistakable doom sound with vibes and structures that were created out of the blue.
Resulting in two tracks in which the band stretches the boundaries of its sound once again.
